Background of the Study
Viral hashtags on Twitter have become influential markers in digital communication, often encapsulating social movements and cultural trends. In Nigeria, these hashtags not only organize content but also drive changes in morphosyntactic structures. The phenomenon of viral hashtags demonstrates how digital media can shape language by promoting the adoption of non-standard syntactic forms, creative word orders, and novel morphological constructions (Chukwu, 2023). This study investigates the impact of viral hashtags on the morphosyntactic features of Nigerian English by comparing language used during various Twitter movements. It explores how the constraints of the Twitter platform—such as character limits and the need for rapid dissemination—influence language structure. The research analyzes how these viral hashtags serve as catalysts for linguistic innovation and social commentary, thereby challenging traditional language norms. By situating these digital practices within the broader context of language evolution, the study provides insights into the mechanisms by which social media drives morphosyntactic change in Nigeria (Okoro, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of viral hashtags in Nigerian Twitter movements, there is a dearth of empirical research on their impact on morphosyntactic structures. Existing studies have focused on lexical innovation, while the syntactic and morphological consequences of hashtag use remain underexplored. This gap limits our understanding of how digital trends affect language structure and the evolution of non-standard forms. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the morphosyntactic effects of viral hashtags in Nigerian Twitter discourse, thereby clarifying the link between digital activism and language change (Adeniyi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the morphosyntactic structures associated with viral hashtags.

  2. To compare these structures across different Twitter movements.

  3. To develop a model linking digital trends with morphosyntactic change.

Research Questions:

  1. What morphosyntactic changes are associated with viral hashtags in Nigerian Twitter movements?

  2. How do these changes vary across different hashtags?

  3. What factors influence the adoption of these non-standard forms?

Significance of the Study
The study illuminates the impact of viral hashtags on language structure, offering valuable insights for linguists and digital media analysts. Its findings contribute to understanding the relationship between social media trends and language evolution in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Viral Hashtags: Popular hashtags that spread rapidly on social media.

  2. Morphosyntactic Structures: The combined morphological and syntactic aspects of language.

  3. Twitter Movements: Social and political campaigns conducted on Twitter.
